“We’re open 24/7”, she says in a tone that demonstrates how thrilled she is to be scanning Arnott’s Scotch Fingers at that hour. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Having never before been in a supermarket past the closing time of 5:30 in the afternoon, I was noticeably aghast.
“Where do you think you are?” she asks incredulously.
Obviously not in Kansas anymore.
There are many positive things to be said about Screen Worlds, the new permanent exhibition at ACMI, but let’s start with the most relevant: You don’t have to be a film guru, couch potato, tech geek or a popular culture historian to enjoy it – and it’s free.
Suffice to say, most denizens of our fair city have a lengthy and intense love-hate relationship with our public transport system. While our city’s infrastructure may bear the mark of a commuter-friendly location, the train, tram and bus-riders I know mainly carry the scars of missed meetings, movies and mime shows.
